Until 12th January, the landscape objects of the festival “The way through the Christmas trees” may still be viewed in Riga, and several of the Christmas trees are already proving to be the favourites of festival visitors, who have voted on the www.eglufestivals.lv site. Voting will continue until the last day of the festival

In anticipation of the festive season, this year, the organisers of the landscape object festival “The way through the Christmas trees” are inviting the public to enter the competition “An alternative Christmas tree” by sending in photos of their own festive creations in their homes, offices or gardens.

Germany’s TV programme: Christmas in Riga

It is believed that in 1510 children came across the fir tree installed by the Fastelavn* revellers in front of the Blackheads House in Riga, meant for the ritual to celebrate the winter solstice, decorated with apples, straw decorations and coloured string. The decorated tree was so beautiful that the tradition was retained and spread throughout the world – at least according to the Latvians.

All are welcome to take part in the voluntary scheme „15 Christmas Tree Stories”

Throughout the scheme, the “Three Brothers” courtyard in Old Town Riga (entrance from Pils iela 20) will be transformed into a forest of fir trees, where every evening at 19.00 hours, one of the trees will be specially decorated, under the guidance of artists and well-known personalities. The “Three Brothers” courtyard will be open from 18.00 to 21.00 hours.

On 5th December, with the opening of the exhibition at Riga Town Hall, as well as a festival performance and the switching on of the Christmas Tree in Town Hall Square, the 10th landscape object festival “The way through the Christmas trees” was declared open.

Although historians are divided in thought about the first known decorated Christmas tree, one of the oldest legends says that the first Christmas tree was decorated in Riga, in 1510.

The festival „The way through the Christmas trees” will begin in Rātslaukums in Riga, with an exhbition, performance and switching on of the Christmas tree”

On Thursday, 5th December, the 10th landscape object festival “The way through the Christmas trees” will begin with the unveiling of the exhibition “The Story of Riga’s Christmas Tree” in the Town Hall, a performance about the first decorated Christmas tree and the switching on of the Christmas tree in Town Hall Square. The opening ceremony will be attended by management from Riga City Council, Riga’s celebration dance group, festival artists and organisers, and all are invited, especially families with children.

Pori gets to know the festival „The way through the Christmas trees”

In November, in the build-up to Christmas, an exhibition “The Story of Riga’s Christmas Tree” was unveiled in Riga’s friendship city of Pori (Finland), which tells the story of the first decorated Christmas tree and the festival inspired by this legend.
